ANGLETON, TX -- Benchmark Electronics will close its plant here in the first half next year, according to a mandatory notice the EMS company filed with the state of Texas.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act letter submitted to the state, Benchmark will shutter the 109,000 sq. ft. plant at some point between Jan. 1 and Jul. 1, 2021.

Nearly 200 workers will be affected, the filing said, and separate media reports indicate that some have been notified that terminations will begin this summer. Workers will be eligible to apply for open positions in other company locations, the company said.

The company was founded as a spinoff from medical implant manufacturer Intermedics, and was headquartered in Texas from 1979 until 2017, when it moved to Tempe, AZ.

Benchmark's factory in Austin will remain open.
