SAN FRANCISCO -- Nokia has filed claims in US court, alleging rival Apple's iPhone violates Nokia patents for certain mobile phone wireless standards.

In the suit, Nokia claims infringement of 10 patents covering GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN standards that relate to wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption functions. Nokia said the patents have been licensed by about 40 companies, “including virtually all of the leading mobile device vendors," and that all iPhones are infringing.

In a statement, Nokia VP for legal and intellectual property Iklla Rahnasto said, “By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation."
