BANNOCKBURN, IL – An IPC survey due today on IPC-J-STD-709 revolves around the debate over whether the proposed standard's requirements will be based on a verifiable series of tests.

According to task group members, IPC and the task group chairmen are seeking to set limits on just chlorine and bromine from flame retardants, and not total elemental halogens.

There are no test methods to verify the amounts of those two halogens, however, and other published documents require elemental bromine and chlorine totals. Other task group members support a so-called “dual system” compromise that includes an option for testing and verification.
