PEACHTREE CITY, GA – The Printed Circuit Engineering Association will host a 3.5-hour signal routing webinar on Nov. 4. The webinar, “Designing the Signal Routing to Control Energy in Digital PCBs,” will be presented by PCB design instructor Susy Webb.

While great care is often given to the way signals are routed, frequently the full energy path is not considered or even understood. As the signal energy travels around a layer or moves layer to layer throughout the stackup, many troublesome complications can lead to poor signal integrity or EMI performance.

This webinar will examine:

  • The electronics and physics of signals: what this energy is and where it is actually located, along with its ability to spread out and possible containment measures needed
  • The physics of rise time, signal flow, impedance control, and some EMI mechanisms and control measures
  • The differences in the signal, which are based on location and frequency. Transmission lines, crosstalk, and reference planes will be discussed
  • The way the signals fanout, route, return, and change layers in the board. Because this is critical to signal quality, the presentation will focus on routing information, including a detailed routing order, location, and spacing
  • Quality planes, which are critical for controlling energy and return. This webinar will focus on designing a properly stacked board, which is influential in providing a path for the energy to travel from layer to layer and minimizing potential antennas

The webinar will help attendees understand why certain routing scenarios are more effective than others.

Webb is a senior PCB design engineer and design instructor with over 45 years of experience. Her career includes experience in coastal and oceanographic oil exploration and monitoring equipment, point-to-point microwave network systems, and CPCI and ATX computer motherboards. She is a regular speaker at PCB West and PCB East. She has consulted for individual companies and groups for the past 20 years. Her presentations discuss the practical implementation of complex engineering concepts into board layout and methods to improve the overall design and flow of printed circuit boards. She is CID certified, a former writer/columnist for PCD&F magazine, a chapter writer for Clyde Coombs’ Printed Circuits Handbook, and coauthor of the PCEA CPCD program. Webb is also an active member of the PCEA board and education committees.
