TEMPE, AZ -- Amtech Systems reported fiscal first quarter net revenue of $29.1 million, up 31% from a year ago. Solar demand made up $11.4 million of sales, with sales of equipment for SMT and semiconductor processing making up the difference.

"Our semi business has been a steady contributor over the last few quarters as its underlying markets have improved," chief executive Fokko Pentinga said. "During our first quarter, this segment produced both good volumes and margins."

The net loss for the period ended Dec. 31 was $53,000, up from a net loss of $4 million last year. The gross margin was 29%, up 200 basis points from fiscal 2016.

Customer orders in the quarter were $34.7 million, of which $15.9 million was for solar equipment.

The company expects revenues for the quarter ending Mar. 31 in the range of $27 million to $30 million.

Amtech is the parent company of BTU.
