SALEM, NH -- A Synchronized Manufacturing Technologies technician was airlifted to an intensive care unit after a wave soldering machine caught fire and burned him from the chest up on Monday.

The 42-year-old male worker, whose first name is Scott, was a new employee, sources told CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY,

He has been hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, about 50 miles away from Salem. His injuries did not appear life-threatening, according to officials.

According to published reports, the worker was opening the machine to add an "alcohol-based chemical." At that time, fire "engulfed the machine and severely burned his chest and face," according to the Eagle-Tribune and other papers.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has begun investigating the accident, a spokesman said.
