NEWARK, NY -- EMS provider IEC's net sales rose 37% to $16.3 million for the period ended March 27.

The net income was $1.1 million, not including a gain of $1.5 million in income tax benefits, which brought the total to $2.6 million for the quarter, up from $673,000 a year ago.

"The company has experienced solid new orders and despite the recessionary outlook for the economy, we expect continued growth in both revenue and profitability throughout fiscal 2009," said chairman Barry Gilbert in a press release.

Gross margin improved 4.4 points from a year ago. IEC expects its gross profit percentage to be 14.5% to 15.5% over the balance of the year.
