SAN FRANCISCO – December poll results were at their weakest level of 2006, says Deutsche Bank Equity Research. CIOs expect IT budgets to grow 5.8% during the next 12 months, down from 6.5% in September.

Results for very large (more than 5,000 employees) and large firms (1,001 to 5,000 workers) weakened, with CIOs for both groups expecting 3% growth in the next 12 months (vs. 8% and 5%, respectively, in September). Very small firms (1 to 100 employees) were also less optimistic, expecting 9% growth (vs. 10% in September). Medium (501 to 1,000 employees) and small (101 to 500 employees) firms were more optimistic, with CIOs expecting 9% and 7% growth (vs. 5% and 5%, respectively, in September).

Computer hardware was the top spending priority in the December poll with 55.8% of respondents planning to increase spending (vs. 46.9% in September). Almost 53% of respondents plan to increase storage systems spending, up from 48.1%. Medium-sized companies led results for both computer hardware and storage, with 63.2% predicting increased hardware budgets (vs. 44.8% previously).

Storage was also a priority for medium-sized firms, with 70% (vs. 52% in September) of CIOs expecting increased spending, followed by very large companies (>5,000) at 62.5% (vs. 47% in September).

The majority (63.6%) of respondents cited no plans to upgrade to Vista or Office 2007 in 2007, while 20.7% need to evaluate pricing and user training costs before considering an upgrade. Of the 15% that will upgrade, 8.3% will upgrade to both, while 5.8% will only upgrade to Office 2007 and 1.7% will only upgrade to Vista.
