TAIPEI -- Asustek's chairman said the motherboard maker will its separate its contract manufacturing operations from its branded products group as soon as possible. The company previously said it would split the divisions in 2008.

Instead, the company will split the operations by year end , and the new company will be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, according to published reports. According to the report, chairman Johnny Shih said Asustek will focus on product branding, while the new EMS group would build notebook PCs and motherboards.

In doing so, Asustek is following the path of Acer, which formed the EMS company now known as Wistron in order to concentrate on PCs and peripherals. Acer is now the third largest supplier of branded PCs.

Asustek is the world's largest manufacturer of branded motherboards and the ninth largest maker of branded notebook PCs. It is unclear where the new EMS arm will rank worldwide
