NARSAPURA, INDIA – Wistron has downgraded the roles of its head in India, as well as its operations head there, following violence at its Narsapura plant in December, according to an unnamed government source.

Sudipto Gupta, the company’s former managing director in India, is moving to a business development role, the source said, and Gupta’s previous position has yet to be filled.

Certain internal reporting structures are also changing.

"This is Wistron signaling to investors, to clients, to India that it has moved beyond the shadow of the December incident, and is ready for new business," the industry source said.

The move comes after thousands of contract workers destroyed equipment and vehicles at a factory in December, resulting in millions of dollars of damage and a temporary shutdown.

Some 7,000 workers are assembling iPhones at the reopened plant, and shipments have resumed.
