TAIPEI -- Foxconn will raise wages of its China-based workers by 30%, effective immediately, according to reports.

"With the pay raise, we hope workers don't need to work overtime as much and thus gain more time for leisure and have a happier working environment," the Associated Press reported, quoting a Foxconn official.

The AP reports the company's salary in China is about 900 yuan ($130) per month.

Previous reports indicated the electronics manufacturer would raise salaries 20%.

The decision comes after 11 workers have committed suicide at the company's China plants, sparking criticism over the company's working and living conditions. Most of the firm's 400,000-plus workers in China spend all their time on campus, either working or residing in company owned dorms.
