TORONTO -- SMTC today announced the appointment of Ed Smith as interim president and chief executive, effective Feb. 17.

Smith will also be elected to the board of directors.

Smith and outgoing president and CEO Sushil Dhiman will work together during a transition period beginning Feb. 6.

Smith recently was senior vice president of Global Embedded Solutions at Avnet and held various other positions with Avnet since 1994. From 2002 to 2004, He was president and chief executive of SMTEK International, a tier II EMS manufacturer which was SMTEK International, Inc. was acquired by CTS Corp in January 2005. He currently serves as chairman of the Electronics Components Industry Association.

“The board has been diligently working to hire an interim CEO since the announcement of Sushil’s departure on Jan. 23. We are fortunate to have an executive of Ed’s experience and background join SMTC as both as director and interim CEO. We believe his leadership will have a profound impact on the future and success of SMTC,” stated chairman Clarke Bailey.
