SAN JOSE -- Electronic design automation revenues fell 17.7% year-over-year in the fourth quarter to $1.32 billion. The decline was broad-based, said the EDA Consortium, which tracks the figures.

The four-quarter moving average declined 9.4%. (Figures numbers which include the first two quarters of 2008 have been revised.)

“Declines in CAE, IC physical design and verification, and PCB/MCM resulted in an overall decline for Q4,” said Walden C. Rhines, Mentor Graphics' CEO and chairman. “The double-digit drop occurred in all regions except Western Europe, which showed an 8.4% decline.”

For the quarter, employment among reporting companies was 27,311, down 0.9% from the year before and 3.1% sequentially.

Computer-aided engineering revenue was $501.8 million, down 24.4% from 2007. IC physical design and verification sales fell 32.7% to $296.5 million. PCB and MCM revenue was off 11.6%, to $135.9 million.

Two areas showed growth. Semiconductor intellectual property (SIP) revenue totaled $285.5 million, up 7.6%. And services revenue was up 24.5% to $98.9 million.

North America purchased $569.1 million of EDA products and services, down 22.7%. Sales to Western Europe were down 8.4% to $290.3 million, Japan fell 17.3% to $261.3 million, and Rest-of-World decreased 15.4% to $197.9 million.
