SAN JOSE -- Sanmina-SCI will change its name to Sanmina, effective Nov. 15.

The printed circuit board fabricator and assembler, cofounded as Sanmina by current CEO Jure Sola, added "SCI" following its acquisition of SCI Systems in December 2001.

In a statement, the company called the change "in line" with its branding strategy. "Sanmina will continue to focus on high value-added services with an emphasis on design and engineering, manufacturing, logistics, repair and end-of-life services for its target markets. SCI will remain as a brand for the company's defense and aerospace business," the firm said. SCI stood for Space Craft Inc., a US defense electronics subcontractor whose history dates to 1960. SCI founder Olin King died earlier this year.

"With over 50 years of experience, SCI has strong brand recognition in the defense and aerospace industry providing ruggedized communications products. Changing our company name to Sanmina and branding our product businesses reinforces our commitment to our product strategy. This change allows for the product groups to go to market with their offerings while leveraging all of the benefits of being part of Sanmina," said Sola.

Eastern-US: China’s New Competitor?

Parity emerges among EMS Factories from Asia, Mexico and the US.

For the first time in years we see parity in the Eastern US among EMS factories from Asia, Mexico and the US. This EMS market condition will permit American OEMs (the EMS industry refers to OEMs as customers) to have more EMS pathways to choose from. Now more than ever, such EMS assignments will require deeper investigation relating to the OEMs’ evaluation of manufacturing strategies.
