SAN JOSE, CA — North America-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers reported bookings rose 10.7% sequentially in April, suggesting a near-term rebound is on the way.
OEMs reported $1.6 billion in orders in April 2012 on a three-month average basis, the trade group SEMI said. The book-to-bill ratio was 1.10, A book-to-bill of 1.10 means that $110 worth of orders were received for every $100 of product billed for the month. It was the third straight month the ratio topped 1.0, the indicator of future growth. Semi gear bookings are considered a leading indicator for future printed circuit board design, fabrication and assembly growth. Bookings in April rose 10.7% over the final March 2012 numbers, and were flat compared to April 2011. Billings rose 13% from March but were down 11% from April 2011. “Equipment orders in April increased to the value last reported one year ago,” said Dan Tracy, senior director of Industry Research & Statistics at SEMI. "Since the last book-to-bill report, indications of increased spending have come from both the foundry and packaging subcontractor segments.” The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving averages of worldwide bookings and billings for North American-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Billings and bookings figures are in millions of US dollars.
