TAIPEI -- Foxconn has raised worker salaries in Southern China 16 to 25%, saying it wants to set a "good example" for Chinese manufacturers.

It marked the third salary hike since 2010. although government mandates have also been behind the push for higher wages.

A junior level worker in Shenzhen now makes 1,800 yuan ($290) per month, twice the monthly pay three years ago. Workers have the opportunity to make more than 2,200 yuan per month, based on technical acumen.

"As a top manufacturing company in China, the basic salary of junior workers in all of Foxconn's China factories is already far higher than the minimum wage set by all local governments," the world's largest EMS company said in a statement. "We will provide more training opportunities and learning time, and will continuously enhance technology, efficiency and salary, so as to set a good example for the Chinese manufacturing industry."

The company did not indicate if wages in other areas would be affected. Foxconn has relocated large volumes of production to western China due to the higher wage rates in the Shenzhen area.
