TOKYO -- Toyota is recalling about 1.1 million of its Corolla and Matrix models in part due to the potential of solder joint cracking in the engine-control unit.

According to published reports, Toyota acknowledges that the solder joints could crack under certain undisclosed conditions. The automaker also disclosed the possibility of a varistor cracking where it is soldered to the circuit board.

The failure can cause affected vehicles to stall, shift incorrectly, not start, or potentially shut off the engine while in operation.
