| Norway Proposes Import Ban on 18 Toxic Chemicals |

OSLO, NORWAY – According to a statement circulated by the UK Department of Trade and Industry, Norway plans to ban the import of several substances in consumer products. The list of substances to be banned includes arsenic, bisphenol A, cadmium, diethylhexylphtalate (DEHP), lead, medium-chained chlorinated paraffins (MCCP), the musk compounds, perfluorooctyl acid (PFOA), some selected surfactants (DTDMAC, DODMAC/DSDMAC, DHTDMAC), triclosan, pentachlorphenol, tributyltin and triphenyltin compounds (TBT/TPT), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD). The ban, if approved, would limit many common products, including GaAs chips. Under WTO rules, countries seeking to introduce non-tariff barriers to trade should notify the WTO. Objections must be lodged in Geneva within six weeks.
