Judging the reign of a trade group executive is different from measuring the performance of a for-profit business. At the end of the day, the trade association is supposed to help make its members more competitive and financially secure. Can anyone honestly say that because of IPC, their company is in better shape than it was a decade ago? That failing is, deservedly or not, McGuirk’s legacy.

It’s a new world, and IPC has a great opportunity for a fresh start unencumbered by the self-involved policies of the outgoing administration. I strongly urge readers to contact the IPC board (ipc.org/ContentPage.aspx?pageid=IPC-Board-of-Directors) with their suggestions. I would be happy to forward comments as well.

In passing. With regret, we offer condolences to friends and family of longtime Cookson materials expert and CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY columnist Paul Lotosky, who died Aug. 1.
