Handbook for Critical Cleaning – Cleaning Agents and Systems

Edited by Barbara & Edward Kanegsberg, 2011

The range of cleaning topics here is wide; it is more an engineering library resource, rather than a personal reference book, unless your interest covers all cleaning disciplines. I recommend engineers check the chapter listing for an insight to the wide scope of these titles.

A number of excellent chapters are specific to electronics applications, including materials, equipment, processes and failure modes. I particularly liked Mike Bixenman’s chapter, which says the most important issue in cleaning is solubility, often overlooked. This chapter could be extended into its own book with more illustrations and examples.

This is a good introduction and guide to requirements for clean room environments and cleanliness levels.

I will post my top ten books for 2011 in a future column.

Bob Willis will run training workshops at SMTA International, and has 2011 online training webinars on more than 20 design, assembly and soldering process topics at www.bobwillisonline.com/training.asp. He also will return to IPC Apex Expo 2012 in San Diego with more workshops.
